Proposal Information

Description:

The Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (HRNERR) is a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The Reserve works to improve the health and vitality of the Hudson River Estuary by protecting estuarine habitats through research and monitoring, education, stewardship, restoration, and training.

HRNERR is seeking interns to assist the Reserve's Research program in conducting environmental monitoring of the Hudson River and its tidal marshes. By participating in this internship, you will gain experience with standard protocols used to collect water quality, nutrient, and weather data. This position may support tasks including how to safely store, handle, and dispose of chemicals, clean glassware, and prepare chemical standards. Students will also have opportunities to assist in tidal marsh habitat monitoring.

Other potential internship duties include assisting with elevation surveys, assisting with tide station maintenance, river water sampling (from shore or boat), assisting with laboratory protocols, calibrating instruments, and data entry. Eligible applicants must be comfortable working in and around water and able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work tasks may vary and include laboratory, field, and desk settings. Our days of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm. Interns must be available to work at least 5 consecutive hours for 1 to 2 weekdays (full days preferred).
