Description:
Watershed Planning Intern will assist DOW staff with implementation of New York's Chesapeake Bay Program and other DEC clean water plans. Tasks would include data analysis of best management plan implementation and water quality data, various GIS projects, and participation in Chesapeake Bay Program workgroups. The ideal candidate would have coursework in a combination of environmental science, GIS, and public policy and experience with climate change topics and with stormwater management practices. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
Updating the Clean Water Plans layer with information to categorize features such as pollutants of concern, acreage, land use, disadvantaged communities, pollutant targets, implementation plans, pollutant sources; and exploring efficiencies in developing success stories.
Research nutrient retention rates/amounts on the landscape as a result of floodplain reconnection and streambank stabilization. Projects would include continuation of a literature review summary; development of recommendations for further studies to quantify nutrient retention rates/amounts associated with restoration; and, if feasible based on literature review, development of coefficients for nutrient reductions from various modifications to streambanks, streambeds and floodplains.
Minimum Qualifications:
18 college semester credit hours in any combination of the following: engineering, geology, environmental science, natural or physical science, drafting, mathematics, or surveying.
