Description:
The Bureau of Special Projects within Division of Environmental Remediation (DER) would benefit from the inclusion of an intern from the Climate Corps SUNY Internship program. One of the primary initiatives for this intern position would be to improve DER's understanding on climate hazards and possible vulnerabilities throughout the Divisions remedial program. Key focus would be on remedial programs maintaining protection of human health and the environment under possible climate hazards. The intern would collaborate directly with DER project managers and be involved in several projects to design how to incorporate climate hazard mapping into remediation workplans that could impact DER's projects and work flow. Activities are expected to include:
Review relevant literature about impacts of climate hazards on remediation projects;
Find, compile, and consolidate maps and geographic information system (GIS) datasets relevant to climate hazard mapping using ArcGIS;
Analyze remedial program workplans to identify vulnerable activities or structures, evaluate potential economic impacts, and impacts to project schedules.
Perform spatial analyses using GIS to determine areas with higher probability and severity of impact;
Writing and/or reviewing climate resiliency and mitigation plans;
Internship would culminate in the selected candidate presenting findings to DEC staff.
As part of this assessment, the selected candidate would visit specific remedial program sites. We expect that at the end of the internship the candidate will connect their acquired academic knowledge to its direct practical applications in a variety of environmental remediation projects.
