Proposal Information

Description:

Remedial Bureau C, within Division of Environmental Remediation (DER), would benefit from the inclusion of an intern from the Green Corps SUNY Internship program. Many of Bureau C's sites are located in Region 3 and the bureau also has a high percentage of Brownfield Cleanup Program sites. Due to the urban nature of many of these sites, short-term disruptions posed by cleanups can cause significant stress on the surrounding community. In order to mitigate some of these concerns, NYSDEC is working with remediating parties to minimize the overall environmental effects of remediation activities by including Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) Best Management Practices (BMPs) and climate resiliency in DER's projects and work flow.

In order to help fulfil this mission, the intern would be involved in projects such as the below:

Tracking Greenhouse Gas metrics (including analyzing and reviewing metrics from SiteWise, SEFA or a comparable technology) for projects implemented in State Superfund and Brownfield Cleanups;
Reviewing and analyzing work plans to identify vulnerable activities or structures, evaluate potential economic impacts, and impacts to project schedules. Suggest best management practices that can be implemented in order to mitigate impacts and meet GSR goals;
Review relevant literature about greenhouse gas mitigation within urban environments and propose BMPs and mitigation methods to implement;
Compiling GSR statistics from Bureau C remedial sites;
Writing and/or reviewing climate screenings, climate vulnerability assessments and climate resiliency plans;
Creating a GIS layer of disposal facilities with disposal acceptance standards / guidelines / limits. The layer will be used by DER PMs to determine the closest disposal facilities and reduce GHGs associated with disposal practices.
The selected candidate would be encouraged to visit specific sites which are involved with the above projects. The candidate would learn how remedial sites are managed and help incorporate GSR, climate resiliency, and best management practices at remedial sites with a focus on sites located within urban and Environmental Justice communities. The candidate would compile GSR statistics for Remedial Bureau C. The candidate would create a list of disposal facilities with disposal guidelines for integration into a GIS layer for DER PM use.
