Description:
The ideal candidate would currently be working towards a degree in human services, social work, psychology, criminal justice, or mental health counseling. The student intern would work under the supervision of our Licensed Master Social Workers. Students would be afforded the rare opportunity to work in a correctional setting with the sex offender population. Students would learn to administer actuarial assessment tools, assess the incarcerated individual's risk to sexually reoffend, co-facilitate treatment and psychoeducational groups, work as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team, learn about treatment and discharge planning; as well as various other clinical and case management duties. They will also become familiarized with the Criminal Justice System, from courts, to incarceration, and release to the community. They will also develop clinical skills and professionalism while maintaining ethical standards in the field.
Skills: Professionalism (attire, punctuality, ability to follow established policies, etc.); Ability to maintain healthy boundaries with incarcerated individuals; Ability to address concerns through appropriate channels, with respect to functioning in a para-military environment (i.e. following chain of commend); Effective listening and motivational interviewing skills; Willingness to be receptive and responsive to feedback; Supportive of DOCCS Mission to improve public safety by providing a continuity of appropriate treatment services in safe and secure facilities where incarcerated individuals' needs are addressed and they are prepared for release, followed by supportive services under community supervision to facilitate a successful completion of their sentence.
