Position Title: Regional Sustainability Steward (Intern)
Location: Central NY Park Region - Jamesville, NY
Division: Environmental Stewardship/FORCES
Compensation: $15.00 - $22.75 per hour
Duration: May - August 2024 with possibility for extension
Hours: Variable hours dependent upon student schedules & project/program needs
(office) Monday through Friday, 830 am - 430 pm
Overview
* The Central Region is looking for Sustainability Stewards to improve the agency's ability to implement more sustainable practices at regional facilities, including park offices, maintenance areas and campgrounds. The Stewards will support efforts to communicate, further develop and implement the statewide Sustainability Initiative and its resource guide to regional facility managers and support staff.
* Interns work 20-40 hours per week during the summer.
Job Duties
* Obtain knowledge and understanding of park management, best management practices for energy conservation and sustainable operations, and new technologies/methodologies for implementation.
* Communicate and coordinate sustainability programs with regional Facility Managers, other operational staff, and the public.
* Assessing current status and needs across facilities and providing recommendations for improvement.
* Develop pilot projects that will be implemented beginning Spring/Summer 2024 that will enhance OPRHP's sustainability initiative with waste/recycling, energy conservation and climate change resiliency.
* Participate in Environmental Stewardship projects and programs that focus on climate resiliency, natural resource management and field biology (e.g., invasive species assessment and mapping).
Qualifications
* Current, undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in environmental studies, sustainability, landscape architecture, engineering, or similar discipline.
* Candidates must be self-motivated, able to initiate projects and tasks, have good time management and organizational skills, and effectively work with park staff and the public.
* Candidates with prior knowledge of sustainability practices and protocols preferred.
