Description:
This position will provide an opportunity to gain a basic understanding of DEC jurisdictions, the types of permits issued by DEP, and the paperwork needed to apply for a permit.
The successful candidate will work Monday-Friday from 8am until 4pm for 10 weeks. The primary intention of this internship is to provide a broad introduction to the different Divisions and Bureaus within DEC and the Civil Service process. The successful intern will have the opportunity to go out into the field with staff from different Divisions and Bureaus to learn a little about the role those staff play within DEC. They will also have a chance to go to our Utica office to learn about some of the unique projects the Utica office handles.
On days when they are not in the field, the intern will scan paper application files for hydroelectric projects so we can transfer our files to Albany. If the intern successfully scans all the hydroelectric files, they will also scan paper copies of Natural Resource permit applications to help us eliminate filing cabinets and free up space in our office for staff.
The intern will leave the position with a deeper understanding of the general functions of DEC, and the Division of Environmental Permits specifically, and will learn how to navigate the state employment system. Anyone interested in entering a career with DEC could benefit from the basic knowledge gained and exposure to agency staff in different Divisions and Bureaus provided through this internship.
