Proposal Information

Description:

The Legal Intern will work collaboratively with other Legal division team members and members of other divisions within the Agency to establish a database of case law related to environmental and land use law as it relates to the Adirondack Park Agency. Job duties will involve collecting, analyzing, organizing, and summarizing numerous court decisions and other legal materials. Job duties will also include additional research projects designed to assist the Agency in its interpretation and implementation of relevant laws.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should be pursuing or have completed a Juris Doctor at an accredited law school. Applicants should have a strong academic background and excellent research, writing, and organizational skills. Prior coursework or experience in environmental law and/or administrative law preferred.

About the Agency: Originally created in 1890, the Adirondack Park currently comprises approximately 6 million acres, with just over half of the land owned by New York State and protected under the State constitution, and just under half owned by private landowners. In 1973, the New York State legislature enacted the Adirondack Park Agency Act, which created the Adirondack Park Agency and conveyed on the Agency the requirement and authority to implement long-range land use plans for both State and private lands. The establishment and regulation of a Park of this size comprising public and private lands is unique within the United States, and the Agency often serves as a model for other countries seeking to implement large-scale land use protections.
