Interns will be tasked to assist OPRHP Engineering Staff with the design of projects and active construction projects. This generally will include an Intern working with a Professional Engineer/Landscape Architect on multiple small design projects. Interns will also be involved in daily observation of construction activity, recording & monitoring of construction progress, assisting the project manager with budgeting tasks & contract changes, and reviewing completed work for compliance with contract documents.
Specific Work Duties on Projects:
The chosen individual will be working on design projects which may range from trail design/construction, building rehabilitation, road construction, culvert inspection/design or many other diverse projects within NYS Parks. Interns will have regular interactions with Professional Engineers/Architects/Landscape Architects in the office, in a friendly and mentorship focused work environment.
Day to day tasks that the Intern will be responsible for learning & executing include:
* Inspecting existing infrastructure & documenting existing conditions and dimensions.
* Drafting proposed scopes of work for contractors.
* Researching products and materials.
* Researching codes and regulations.
* Sketching and proposing conceptual solutions to defined problems.
* Estimating material quantities; preparing material lists and cost estimates.
* Searching for suppliers, M/WBE contractors, SDVOB contractors.
* Assisting in the procurement of materials and services.
* Assisting in the preparation of contract documents.
* Corresponding & coordinating with Consultants, Contractors, and OPRHP Staff regarding assigned projects.
* Reviewing consultant work.
* Inspecting contractor work; observing, documenting, and reporting on construction progress.
* Reviewing requests for payment.
* Basic Surveying and GIS mapping
Minimum Applicant Qualifications:
* Student actively pursuing an Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Land Surveying or Engineering: Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, or similar.
* Student enrolled at a Junior/ Senior level within their university, Sophomore level at minimum.
* Needs a basic understanding of engineering concepts, field observation skills- such as note taking and calculations.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
* Experience with AutoCAD Drafting preferred.
* Must have a valid NYS driver's license at the time of appointment and must maintain as a term and condition of employment.
* Must have reliable transportation to get to assigned work sites.
* Excellent organizational skills & effective communication skills
Internship Duration and Hours:
This will be a paid position that will tentatively begin in April/May 2023 and end in August 2023. 40 hours/week in the Summer. We do support part-time employment during semesters if it functionally works for both the student and the office.
