Description:
Zen Buddhist student candidates will learn theory and practices specific to non-denominational prison ministry.
Under the Supervision of the Department of Corrections and Community Superivison (DOCCS) Chaplain, and as the DOCCS Chaplain determins to be appropriate interns will:
-Shadow DOCCS Chaplain in Chaplains daily work including best practices for conducting religious services, the 1:1 DOCCS Chaplians provision of spiritual counseling, guidence, and support, interviewing individuals newly incarcerated at the facility, making rounds, providing faith community specific and non-denominational spiritual guidence and support, attedning staff meetings, reviewing the DOCCS Religious Holy Day Calendar, review of religious books, periodicals, and other materials, maintaining records and other activity in consultation with the assigned Ministerial Program Coordinator.
-Provide Group Education on and Guidance for ZEN principles and practice for Incarcerated Individuals
-Facilitate Mediation Groups for Incarcerated Individuals
They will become familiar with diverse faith communitieis, beliefs and practices and learn about the Criminal Justice System, from courts to incarceration and release to the community. They will have the opportunity to develop clinical skills, strong professional boundaries, ethical standards, and professionalism.
Candidates must be enrolled and in an accredited Association of Clinical Pastoral Education certified Clinical Pastoral Education Zen Buddhism program, be in good standing and have demonstrated to their Academic Advisor sufficient maturity to serve in a correctional setting.
