Description:
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a technique used to detect species in environmental samples using DNA rather than with live captures of organisms. This tool enables early detection of invasive species before populations can become established and enables management of small populations that would otherwise go undetected. Utilizing this tool for individual species detection requires developing species specific primers. The goal of this internship will be to update e a database of available primers for aquatic invasive species (AIS) of interest in NY state. Additionally, the intern will work with stakeholders statewide to develop a wish-list of AIS species that primers should be developed for and begin primer development and testing. The intern will assist with eDNA sampling as needed. Daily tasks include literature reviews, transferring findings to a database, and field sampling for eDNA as needed. Hours will typically be 20 hours per week Monday through Friday between 730 AM and 430 PM
