Proposal Information

Description:

For Summer 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, legal interns will be working remotely using Office 365 applications including Microsoft Teams and SharePoint and will be provided with a DEC email address. Legal interns working remotely for DEC's Office of General Counsel (OGC), Central Office in Albany, New York will provide important support to DEC attorneys by, among other things, conducting extensive legal research using online resources and assorted treatises; drafting memoranda of law; drafting legal papers such as orders on consent, motions, notices of hearing and complaints; attending Pre-Hearing Conferences in enforcement cases; organizing discovery documents for enforcement cases and permit hearings; and generating letters to respondents or permittees. Legal interns also attend internal meetings with other attorneys and technical staff and meetings with external entities. Legal interns receive feedback from their supervising and assigned attorneys on a continuing basis.

During the summer, round table discussions are held with the legal interns every week to provide them with the opportunity to discuss their current assignments and learn from each other's experiences. Presentations for the interns regarding emerging topics in the law, and specifically environmental law, as well as legal practice skills are also arranged. Additionally, if the situation allows, virtual educational field trips will be scheduled to demonstrate the application of the assignments. Further, legal interns will present on a legal matter they worked on during the summer internship. All legal interns are also encouraged to attend continuing legal education courses offered for OGC attorneys.

Summer 2021 internships will be unpaid.

At this time, all summer 2021 internship positions have been filled. Only those students who have received and accepted an offer should apply to this posting.
