Description:
With Governor Cuomo's 2021 State of the State Address, the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has been tasked with transforming Philips Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers, to the new NYS Museum of African American History. This multi-phase project will cover the years of 2021 to 2026. The intern will take part in the first phase of creation of this new institution. The Phase 1 development process has begun which includes plans for the physical adaptation of the 18th century historic structure, landscape plans, interpretation, exhibit and collection plans, and institution development.
The Peebles Island Resource Center Team is looking for a flexible individual with an understanding of the state's historic timeline, organizational and research skills to act as an overall administrative assistant and researcher.
Primary tasks -
* Attend a variety of meetings related to NYS MAAH development, take efficient and accurate notes and post on SharePoint in a reasonable time frame. Meetings vary but include; general Program Team meetings, Capital Design team meetings, site meetings, Interpretative, Exhibit and Collection meetings, and others.
* Record all draft drawings and specification on SharePoint.
* Using NY State historic sites and parks, as well as CRIS, the database for Historic Preservation as the baseline, research and categorize material for interpretative and exhibit team. Including identifying resources from around the state that can be used to enhance historic timeline spanning from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries in both the physical exhibit at the site and the virtual wing (website linked directly to exhibits via QR codes or other digital technology.) Final product to be determined, but scope may include an Excel spreadsheet, searchable database and enhanced site map.
* Create a county by county directory/resource guide of historic sites, societies, museums, cemeteries, public art or memorials related to the history of enslaved and free Africans and people of African descent in New York. Resource information will include organizations name, address, specific collection focus, website, name of artist and location of art, and other pertinent information, (i.e., civil war, WW1, Underground Railroad, etc.) when possible.
