Description:
The intern will assist with legal duties at the New York State Gaming Commission, which oversees all legal gambling in New York State including commercial casinos, horse racing, charitable gaming, Indian casinos, interactive fantasy sports and the State Lottery. The Commission's main office is at One Broadway Center in Schenectady.
Interns at the Commission are exposed to a number of different experiences. These include assisting in administrative enforcement investigations and hearings, drafting new agency rules and preparing rulemaking documents, attending administrative hearings, researching statutory issues to provide internal legal advice to the Commission, and drafting memoranda for various issues facing the Commission. The Commission has a wide array of legal concerns including horse racing violations involving equine drugging, occupational licensing, racetrack oversight and human drug use, employee misconduct arbitrations, state lottery promotions and contracts, general administrative concerns (e.g., FOIL), and the regulation of commercial casinos and interactive fantasy sports.
DUTIES: Students at the Commission will be assigned such tasks as assisting hearing officers, doing legal research, preparing pleadings, organizing case files, contacting witnesses, drafting new rules and rulemaking documents, and drafting legal memoranda.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: First year law students.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS: Second or third year law students.
Qualified candidates should possess good research, analytical and writing skills.

LOCATION: Schenectady, NY
COMPENSATION: Unpaid but qualifies for Albany Law School credit. (Spring/Fall)
DURATION: Fall, Summer or Spring Semester; as required by the law school.
HOURS: Minimum 15 hours per week. Flexible as to work days.
