Proposal Information

Description:

The Department of Financial Services is seeking motivated students to serve on behalf of the people of the State of New York as interns. The Department is the state regulator charged with enforcing the Banking, Insurance, and Financial Services Laws, promoting the safety and soundness of financial institutions, and protecting consumers from financial fraud and abuse.

Interns may be placed in the following divisions/business units: Consumer Protection and Financial Enforcement Research and Innovation, Information Technology, Banking, Insurance and within executive offices/teams. Interns may assist in investigating violations of the New York Banking, Insurance and Financial Services Laws, perform legal research and analysis, and draft industry guidance, legislation, and regulations.

As part of the DFS Internship experience, interns can expect to gain valuable research, writing, analysis, management and investigative experience. Interns will participate in regularly scheduled skills-building seminars, be given opportunities to meet state and industry professionals, and sit in on various meetings.

The Department is interested in students who write well, have strong research skills, are attentive to detail, can multi-task, and have good time management skills. Students who are interested in government administration, regulation, banking law, insurance law, cyber security, or public policy would find this an excellent placement.

Opportunities are available at both of the Department's locations in downtown Manhattan and in Albany. Positions will be filled based upon availability. Interns during the school year are expected to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week for at least eight weeks.

Positions are uncompensated, but the Department strongly encourages interns to obtain school credit or funding through their schools, compensation through federal work study programs, or a school requirement. The Department will work with students and their schools to coordinate and certify program requirements.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be actively enrolled in a New York State college, university, or graduate program, or be a resident of New York State, attending a college, university or graduate program outside of New York State; have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year college or university (completion of one year's worth of academic credits over a longer period may qualify part-time students for participation in the program), or be a currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program; and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0, or the letter grade equivalent

To Apply: Interested qualified candidates must submit a resume with his or her school GPA, a cover letter, writing sample, unofficial transcript, and three professional references via the New York State Department of Civil Service New York Leaders Student Internship Program. The link to access the program is https://www.cs.ny.gov/nnyl/. Positions will be filled on a rolling basis.
