Proposal Information

Description:

The Department of Financial Services is seeking motivated law school students to serve on behalf of the people of the State of New York as legal interns. The Department is the state regulator charged with enforcing the Banking, Insurance, and Financial Services Laws, promoting the safety and soundness of financial institutions, and protecting consumers from financial fraud and abuse.

Legal interns may be placed in the office of general counsel, consumer protection and financial enforcement division, research and innovation division, holocaust claims processing office, licensed financial services in the banking division, or the property bureau in the insurance division. Interns may assist in investigating violations of the New York Banking, Insurance and Financial Services Laws, perform legal research and analysis, and draft industry guidance, legislation, and regulations. Interns can expect to gain valuable research, writing, and investigative experience.

The Department is interested in students who write well, have strong research skills, are attentive to detail, can multi-task, and have good time management skills. Students who are interested in government regulation, banking law, insurance law, cyber security, or public policy would find this an excellent placement.

Students will work in the Department's downtown Manhattan office. Positions will be filled based upon availability. Applicants must be in their second or third year of law school and in good academic standing. Interns during the school year are expected to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week for at least eight weeks and summer interns are expected to work full time for at least eight weeks.

Positions are uncompensated, but the Department strongly encourages legal interns to obtain school credit or funding through their law schools, compensation through federal work study programs, or fulfill a law school or pro bono requirement. The Department will work with students and their law schools to coordinate the foregoing.

Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Standing - Second or third year of law school with good academic standing
