The NYS Ocean Action Plan highlights sixty-one specific actions within the designated offshore planning area from state waters to the continental shelf to support the ecological integrity of the ocean ecosystem, promote economic growth and sustainable human use of the ocean ecosystem, increase the resiliency of ocean resources associated with climate change, and to empower the public in decision-making and ocean stewardship.
Working with the NYS Ocean Coordinator and Ocean & Marine Outreach Coordinator, the selected intern will be responsible for assisting with the creation of the first State of the Ocean Report, including synthesizing, creating, and editing content; maintaining and expanding databases related to ocean outreach; and creating and implementing outreach strategies and materials related to conservation of marine species, such as sharks.
The position is an unpaid internship with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The program runs for a minimum of 6 weeks (more if time and project planning allows). The hours are flexible and a commitment of 20-30 hours per week is preferred. Work will take place at the Division of Marine Resources in East Setauket, at offsite locations, and from home as needed. Work outside of the office will require use of a personal laptop (not provided). A DEC email account will be set up to use for work for the duration of the internship period. Orientations and Brown Bag Forums will be offered throughout the summer period to take advantage of networking with DEC staff and other DEC interns.
