Description:

The Financial Management Section of the Administrative Finance Bureau consists of 16 staff, made up of managers, accountants, budget analysts and support staff whose overall function is to provide fiscal support to the Department. Each person has their own office or workstation and works individually to complete their assignments. Staff will often work together and share ideas, because the work within the unit is very similar between different program areas.

With guidance and support from the supervisor, the intern will be expected to learn to navigate the Departmental accounting system in order to prepare monthly program spending analyses as well as divisional staff rosters and other ad hoc assignments as necessary. Also, the intern would assist with grant procurement activities, such as evaluating responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and processing the resulting contract awards.

In this position, the intern will begin to learn how to use major business applications to do accounting work such as the Statewide Financial System, Human Resources Portal, IBM OnDemand and others in order to prepare complete and thorough analyses. In addition, they will build familiarity with state procurement rules through their work evaluating and processing grant awards. Finally, they will learn how to work individually, how to problem solve and how to schedule work in order to meet deadlines.
