Proposal Information

Description:

The Department of Labor is seeking an intern for the Anti-Retaliation unit in New York. The Anti-Retaliation unit was created in October 2015 in order to end retaliation against workers who complain about wage theft, misclassification, or other rights protected by the New York Labor Law. The unit of attorneys and investigators conduct thorough investigations to determine whether workers have been unlawfully retaliated against and if so, impose penalties and damages. When practicable the Unit also seeks to immediately reverse the retaliatory action(s) by informing affected employers of consequences and providing the employer with an opportunity to reverse or mitigate the retaliatory action(s).

Under supervision of an attorney, the intern will meet with worker(s) to take claims, identify whether the DOL can assist the worker and if so how, create a strategy to conduct an investigation, and conduct the investigation by working with employers and witnesses to obtain information and documents via written and verbal requests. The Intern will be expected to draft reports of all aspects of the investigation conducted. The Intern will participate in settlement discussions, and attend hearings/conferences as needed. They will also conduct legal research.

This will be an opportunity for a law student to build practical experience from studies in law school and assist the Department with servicing members of the public.

Please include a writing sample with resume and cover letter.
