Description:
The NYS Department of Transportation is looking to fill Engineering Intern positions statewide. Duties will vary from position to position, based on the assignment. Interns may work in one of a variety of program areas under the direct supervision of a NYSDOT Professional Engineer, Senior Landscape Architect, Senior Land Surveyor, or Environmental Specialist.
Internships are full time (37.5 hours per week), Monday through Friday. Daily schedule dependent on the position.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in one of the following accredited degree programs, and have already completed one full time semester (at least 12 credit hours): Civil Engineering; Civil Engineering Technology; Construction Engineering; Construction Engineering Technology; Construction Engineering Management; Construction Engineering Management Technology; Geotechnical Engineering; Hydraulics Engineering; Materials Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Structural Engineering; Transportation Engineering; or Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.
Candidates must also be currently enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) for the upcoming fall 2019 semester.
The intern will work at the Hudson Valley Transportation Management Center (HVTMC) in Hawthorne, NY:
1. Assist with upgrading four of DOTs existing Overheight Vehicle Detectors (OHVDs) to provide more functionality, for use of the existing detectors, cameras and VMSs with an enhanced system to allow for reduced false-positive detection, increased communication bandwidth at a reduced cost, and an improved warning system for HVTMC Operations staff and other partners.
2. Assist in the fitting out of the HVTMC ITS Lab to provide technical resources to the HVTMC staff.
3. Assist with ITS equipment Optimization (selecting the right/better equipment for ITS use and preparing the new design/selection criteria for ITS devices)
4. Assist with ITS Simulation (for planning proposes)
5. Assist with real time traffic data analysis (for operational guidance such as ramp metering parameter set up and queue detection parameter set up)
6. Assist with Electrical and fiber Optic Equipment Optimization (selecting the right/better equipment for Electrical, Fiber optic cable system, Ethernet cable, field cabinet assembly, (use and prepare the new design/selection criteria for the equipment and their assembly)
7. Assist with network simulation platform (provide emulation and simulation platforms for network design work prior to field installation of the equipment.)
