Proposal Information

Description:

Please Note: A Background check, without exception, will be required for this position.

The DCH Linux team has a challenging Student Assistant position available for the right candidate. The chosen candidate could potentially assist in many aspects of managing, building and migrating Physical/Virtual Machines (VM's). These critical systems will be managed both directly, and through the use of 3rd party tools, including new/emerging technologies, such as Chef, Spacewalk, VMware, Rundeck, Ansible Tower, as well as others. DCH Linux currently maintains 1600+ servers and to a lesser extent 850+ appliances and these numbers are constantly increasing.

Current DCH Linux team Projects/Initiatives include:
* Data Center Consolidation (Consolidating multiple data centers into a single data center)
* Automation of creating, deploying, patching and delivering services to/for Linux servers
* Converting non "Red Hat Enterprise Linux" (RHEL) servers to RHEL servers
* Virtualization of identified candidate servers from Physical to Virtual machines (P to V)

Under the supervision of DCH Linux personnel, the Student Assistant may be directed to perform all, or some of, the tasks listed below. This is not an exhaustive list:

* The ability to quickly learn new skills in a fast moving, and a constantly evolving, environment
* Perform typical routine maintenance on RHEL servers and update VMware tools
* Enter "Change Requests" for scheduled maintenance, assist with records management and server decommissioning using the NYS "IT Service Management" (ITSM) System
* Maintain a positive rapport with DCH Linux team staff, vendors, and contractors, as well as other various NYS ITS internal customers
* Analyze output from custom IT Service Management reports and compare to actual server inventory
* Generate ad-hoc reports/documentation using "MS Excel" as well as other MS Office components
* Monitor Linux servers for performance and availability
* Provide input, were appropriate, to suggest improvements to processes to increase performance, reliability and ease of maintenance while adhering to NYS ITS standards
* Perform other tasks as deemed appropriate

DCH Linux team's typical hours and days of operation:

* DCH Linux is a 24/7 operation with General Hours being: M- F, 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
* The selected candidate, for purposes of flexibility, may be able schedule a portion of their workweek outside of the General Hours. These optional times could include evenings, mornings, weekends and holidays on an as needed basis. Total work hours however are not to exceed 20-30 hours
