Description:
The New York State Department of Financial Services ("Department") is seeking motivated law school students to serve as legal interns in its Manhattan office for the fall semester. The Department is the primary state regulator charged with enforcing the Banking, Insurance, and Financial Services laws, promoting the safety and soundness of banks and insurers, and protecting consumers from financial fraud and abuse. The Insurance Frauds Bureau's (IFB) primary mission remains the detection and investigation of insurance/financial fraud and related crimes and the referral for prosecution of persons or groups that commit such acts. The IFB is headquartered in New York City, with six additional offices across the State: Garden City, Albany, Syracuse, Oneonta, Rochester and Buffalo. The IFB has created the following units that focus on particular areas of insurance fraud: Major Case, Arson, General, Auto, Workers' Compensation, Medical, No-Fault and Mortgage and Title.
Legal interns will be placed in the New York City Department's office, Criminal Investigations Unit a part of the Financial Fraud and Consumer Protection Division (FFCPD). Legal interns may assist with investigating violations of New York Banking, Insurance, and Financial Services laws, perform legal research, assist with documenting incoming fraud referrals, Assist the Frauds Bureau with requesting subpoenas from our Office of General Counsel for evidence gathering for cases and proper recording of subpoenas, assist with collection and the writing of narratives for the Frauds Bureau Annual Health Care Report and for the department's FFCPD Annual Report to the Governor's Office. Interns can expect to work in a dynamic office and make meaningful contributions, while gaining valuable research, writing, and investigative experience.
The Department is interested in students who write well, have strong research skills, are attentive to detail, can multi-task, and have good time management skills. Students who are interested in criminal investigations, Law Enforcement, Frauds, consumer protection, government regulation, business law, banking law, insurance law, cyber security, or public policy would find this an excellent placement.
Positions will be filled based upon availability. Applicants must be in their second or third year of law school and in good academic standing. Applicants must be able to commit to working at least 15 hours per week for at least eight weeks. This is a non-paying internship, but applicants may intern for school credit.
Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume and a writing sample.
Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Standing - Second or third year of law school with good academic standing.
