Description:
The intern would assist with the review of a database developed by NYS Geological Survey and over 1,200 images of mine maps obtained from the National Mine Repository to accurately map historic abandoned underground mines. Using ArcGIS and historic mine maps, the intern will georeference historic underground mines, and then overlay these locations with current mine surface features. Additionally, the intern may need to contact county historians to determine if their records contain any additional literature or historical data regarding mine locations. After the underground mine workings are synched with the surface features, this data will be moved to the Department's website and made available to the public. This is an office-based position with no field work required.
Familiarity with geology and the mining industry is desirable, but willingness to learn and to work with others to accomplish these tasks is most important.
