Proposal Information

Description:

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Stream Monitoring and Assessment Section has a summer field technician internship available for a qualifying candidate. The selected candidate will work with monitoring program staff to complete tasks including but not limited to the following:
1. Collect benthic macroinvertebrates, fish (electrofishing with a backpack shocker), and/or diatoms from rivers and streams in multiple drainage basins of New York State
2. Collect water samples for chemical analysis
3. Collect physical and chemical parameters such as habitat assessment measurements, pebble counts, and field water quality parameters
4. Process samples, including logging new samples, sorting and identification of benthic macroinvertebrates, splitting and shipping water samples, data entry including various types of field data
5. Prepare field sampling equipment
6. Calibrate and maintain multi-probe meters used for collection of field water quality parameters
7. Prepare sections of water quality reports, such as species lists or maps

 

Skills:

MS Excel, Word, and Access

Familiarity with GIS

Ability to travel overnight on occasion

Ability to work in boats

Ability to work on various weather cond.
