Proposal Information

Description:

Legal interns at DEC's Office of General Counsel (OGC) in Albany, New York will provide important support to NYSDEC attorneys by, among other things, organizing discovery documents for enforcement cases and permit hearings; drafting legal papers such as orders on consent, and administrative pleadings and motions; attending Pre-Hearing Conferences in enforcement cases, internal meetings, and meetings with external entities; and generating letters to respondents or permittees. Legal interns also conduct extensive legal research using online resources and assorted treatises and draft memoranda of law. With a practice order in place, legal interns may also be given the opportunity to conduct a hearing.

During the summer, round table discussions are held with the interns to provide them with the opportunity to discuss their current assignments and learn from each other's experiences. Presentations for the interns regarding emerging topics in the law, and specifically environmental law, as well as legal practice skills are also arranged. Additionally, educational field trips are scheduled to demonstrate the application of the assignments. All legal interns are also encouraged to attend continuing legal education courses offered for OGC attorneys.

Generally, summer 2018 internships will be unpaid. Please let the internship coordinators know as soon as possible if you are interested in a summer internship for credit, or if you are eligible for grants or other funding for the summer internship, so that the internship coordinators may coordinate with you and your law school.

Students who are interested in applying to this internship should also apply directly to the OGC internship coordinators no later than March 1, 2018 by sending a cover letter, resumé, unofficial transcript, and a writing sample (5 pages or less, double spaced; an excerpt from a longer document is acceptable) to the following email address: OGCInternshipProgram@dec.ny.gov.
