Description:
The Summer 2017 intern project involves implementing a system to evaluate hospital compliance with recent legislative changes to policies related to the Breastfeeding Mothers' Bill of Rights law. The new mandates require hospitals to update their breastfeeding policies by January 16, 2017.
The student will focus on the assessment and evaluation of written hospital breastfeeding policies. Responsibilities include:
- Maintain established system to determine hospitals' status regarding submission of their policies.
- Provide follow-up via email and phone with hospital maternity leaders who have not submitted their policies for review (if there are still hospitals that have not submitted their policies by summer).
- Identify a randomized sample of 36 hospitals which will be coded twice.
- Score policies from 80 hospitals, including the identified 36 Hospitals, and record score for each component and date of review.
- Conduct preliminary analyses, including descriptive statistical analyses for all hospitals, and by level of perinatal care.
- Identify policy areas where there is high non-compliance and/or confusion about policy or regulations.
- Work with staff to clarify areas of low compliance, inconsistent language and/or confusion with the NYS Model Hospital Breastfeeding Policy.
- Send results of policy review, identifying areas of non-compliance, to hospitals.
- Prepare summary report and presentation.
Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Requirements:
- A minimum of one year of SPH graduate work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Core coursework in BMS 505, Biological Basis of Public Health; HPM 500, Health Care Organization, Delivery and Financing; EPI 500, Basic Principles and Methods of Epidemiology; and HPM 525, Social and Behavioral Aspects of Health
- Coursework and/or experience related to policy work preferred.
- Background or experience related to maternal and/or infant health, breastfeeding or nutrition preferred.
