Description:
The focus of this project is to develop collaboration between the Clean, Green, and Healthy Schools program, school-based health centers and regional asthma coalitions across NYS to create a model for environmental management as a component of asthma management in schools. The student will assist program staff with the following tasks toward building a strong collaborative relationship between a statewide school environmental health program and clinical programs designed to improve the health of NYS students:
* Gathering existing asthma management materials to be incorporated into the Clean, Green, and Healthy Schools Program (GCHSP). Possibly through a survey of School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs). They will assist with assessing the materials for suitability for the CGHSP website and inclusion as requirements for demonstrating success in any of the 9 focus areas of the CGHSP.
* Providing CGHSP items to the SBHC Program for their listserv.
* Preparing a workshop or webinar to SBHCs that focuses on environmental asthma triggers, including simple and complex remedial measures/actions.
* Designing and incorporating voluntary suggestions into the CGHSP for ways that schools and their SBHC partners can improve communication.
* Sharing CGHSP materials with SBHCs to improve communication with their partner schools about using environmental management as a mechanism to reduce asthma triggers and other respiratory conditions.
* Developing ways to partner with the asthma contractor to support dissemination and integration of CGHSP concepts into asthma management programs in partnering schools and SBHCs in the highest asthma burden areas in NYS.
* Working with the asthma contractor to incorporate the CGHSP into the statewide training module that will be developed for dissemination to school district clinical staff, administrators, and SBHCs. This training will include information on establishing asthma management programs in schools, including environmental management, staff training on supporting students with asthma, and the implementation of asthma self-management education in schools.
* Conducting education and outreach via webinars or other means to expand school district and SBHC participation in the program.
Students may work Monday through Friday during normal business hours throughout the summer.
