Description:
Mitigation is the process of implementing sustained actions that eliminate or reduce long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards. The value of mitigation is increasingly evident as disasters seem to occur more frequently and the financial resources to rebuild remain scarce. Mitigation programs administered by NYS DHSES cover a wide variety of projects, plans and initiatives to strengthen resiliency and ease recovery across the State of New York.
- The Data Management Assistant (DMA) will be responsible for collecting and organizing project data from recent years into a new information management system database. In order to do this successfully, the DMA will have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel, and will become familiar throughout this internship with historical disasters, programs available (Federal and non-Federal) and the steps involved in project development and grant management.
- The DMA will gather data for completed, in-progress and unfunded mitigation projects submitted to NYS DHSES and assist mitigation staff with developing, implementing and maintaining this new system database.
- Additional work may include website content updates and administrative assistance as appropriate. Potential public outreach/project development may be included at the discretion of the supervisor.
