Description:
Legal interns at DEC's Office of General Counsel in Albany, New York will provide important support to NYSDEC attorneys by, among other things, organizing discovery documents for enforcement cases and permit hearings; drafting legal papers such as orders on consent, and administrative pleadings and motions; attending Pre-Hearing Conferences in enforcement cases, internal meetings, and meetings with external entities; and generating letters to respondents or permittees. Legal interns also conduct extensive legal research using online resources and assorted treatises and draft memoranda of law. With a practice order in place, legal interns may also be given the opportunity to conduct a hearing.
During the summer, we hold round table discussions with the interns to provide them with the opportunity to discuss their current assignments and learn from each others' experiences. We also arrange presentations for the interns regarding emerging topics in the law, and specifically environmental law, as well as legal practice skills. Additionally, we arrange for educational field trips to demonstrate the application of the assignments. All legal interns are also encouraged to attend continuing legal education courses offered for OGC attorneys.
Generally, summer 2017 internships will be unpaid. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in a summer internship for credit, or if you are eligible for grants for the summer internship, so that we may coordinate with you and your law school.
