Proposal Information

Description:

The NYS Office of Information Technology Services, Public Safety Cluster is seeking energetic, intelligent team player who will provide immediate value to the organization! We support the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, the New York State Police, the Division of Corrections and Community Services, the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the Office of Victim Services and the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.

Our systems make use of industry leading technologies to prioritize and preserve the public safety for the citizens of New York State.

The ideal candidate does NOT need to possess expertise with all the relevant technologies but must have a solid foundation in the specific principles and enjoy a challenge!

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)

The GIS Program Office (GPO) is responsible for developing, maintaining, and disseminating GIS data. Major data programs include Orthoimagery, Elevation, Tax Parcels, Civil Boundaries, Streets, and Addresses.
Much of the data development work includes coordination with local governments as well as the federal government, universities and private companies. The GPO also maintains a spatial data warehouse and application to support emergency response and law enforcement. In addition, the GPO is responsible for coordinating GIS across the State. As part of that responsibility, the GPO maintains a GIS clearinghouse and data sharing cooperative. The most recent initiative of the GPO is to develop a consolidated infrastructure called ShareGIS that will allow for the consolidation of multiple GIS services across the State of New York. The GPO also provides GIS support for emergency response.
Students placed in internships with the GPO may be called upon to support any of the initiatives cited above. Tasks may include, but not be limited to:

* Spatial data quality analysis
* Data editing and maintenance
* Map design and compilation
* Python (and other) scripting
* GIS workstation support
* Image processing and analysis
* GIS software including:
-- ArcGIS desktop
-- Open source tools

Preferred qualifications:

Preferred candidates would be enrolled in a bachelor's degree, master's degree or certificate program in an accredited university with a major in geography or GIS, and have a foundation in the areas described above.

Eligibility Requirements:

Each opportunity has unique requirements, but all interested candidates must be:
-- a US Citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States
-- 18 years of age or older
-- a New York State resident or attending a New York State college, university, or graduate program
-- a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year College or University (completion of one year's worth of academic credits over a more extended period of time may qualify part-time students for participation in the Student Intern Program); or a currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program
-- have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0
-- Preferred degree enrollment and/or skills outlined within the individual opportunities

Competitive Salary:

Undergraduate: $18.55/hour
Graduate: $20.81/hour
