Proposal Information

Description:

The Office of Ombudsman (OOTO), is charged with the mission of protecting and promoting the rights of adjudicated juvenile delinquents who are in residential placement. The current incarnation of the office has been in existence since 2007. It currently consists of 5 regionally placed ombudsmen or advocates, and 3 centrally located support and administrative staff. Additionally, OOTO has an advisory board which meets bi-monthly. Section 523 of the Executive Law defines the basic required structure and function of OOTO. The primary function of the intern will be to assist the office in engaging in a critical assessment of the functions of the office, and to make recommendations designed to improve practice and increase efficiency, within the boundary of the statute. The intern will work closely with the Director in assessing challenges and successes of the current office structure. To the extent time allows, the intern will make appropriate recommendations which could be used to inform any relevant regulatory changes.
