Proposal Information

Description:

This summer, you can help ensure pay equity by developing documents on which pay is determined. The mission of the Division of Classification & Compensation (C&C) at the Department of Civil Service is to apply New York State's equal pay for equal work policy, making sure that salary is based on an individual's duties and responsibilities and not on factors unrelated to the performance of the job. As part of its role, C&C reviews requests from State agencies for new positions or changes in title and salary of existing positions, and establishment of salary differentials to ensure equity and a level playing field among agencies.

Interns will be primarily engaged in drafting official job descriptions or classification standards, which play a crucial part in the operation of an effective classification and compensation program. These foundational documents provide the cornerstone for a number of human resources activities such as knowledge and skills assessment, recruitment and selection, employee development, performance evaluation, and of course salary.

Duties will include:
* Identify and collect job duties from internal and external sources.
* Analyze job duties and summarize data.
* Communicate with State agencies to obtain and clarify information on positions' duties and responsibilities.
* Review published job standards and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, and content.
* Draft and edit job standards, consistent with Division guidelines.
* Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
* Develop, write, and maintain information for internal and external audiences on job standards.

Besides honing interns' analytical and communication skills, the internship will provide great exposure to the depth and breadth of work performed by State employees and the impact of such work on the lives of New Yorkers.
If you are ready to gain valuable professional work experience, and possess exceptional analytical and communication skills, we would love to chat with you. Undergraduate students are paid $15 per hour and graduate students receive $17 per hour. Schedule is flexible; interns will be expected to work approximately 35 hours per week.
