Proposal Information

Description:

Policy, Oversight, and Monitoring of Emergency Shelters in NYC.

This internship will provide the candidate with an opportunity to gain an understanding of the homeless shelter system in counties outside of NYC. Currently, the system is undergoing a major redesign in term of how the State oversees the administration of shelters. An internship candidate will have the opportunity to conduct inspections of homeless shelters, prepare reports of the inspections, collect data, identify areas needing technical assistance, and research policy that exists in other areas of the country. Depending on the skill level and interest of the candidate, there may be opportunities to take part in the development and drafting of new regulation and law guiding shelter operations.

If an internship candidate has architecture or engineering experience, they will have the opportunity to review buildings in various conditions ranging from brand-new construction with state-of-art infrastructure to poorly maintained buildings requiring significant improvements. These interns will conduct inspections of the shelters with experienced physical plant inspectors, code enforcement officials, contracted engineers and representatives from various licensing/certifying bodies across government such as, fire departments and building officials.
