Description:
The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is responsible for coordinating services for more than 126,000 New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and other neurological impairments. It provides services directly and through a network of approximately 700 nonprofit service providing agencies, with about 80 percent of services provided by the private nonprofits and 20 percent provided by state-run services.
The Department of Communications oversees all internal and external communications for OPWDD, which include: fielding press inquiries, management of its website and the agency's social media pages, OPWDD's monthly newsletter, video projects, field assignments and various other communications-related duties.
The communications intern will work with the OPWDD communications staff to assist in its over-arching goal of disseminating easy-to-understand, informative information on programs, initiatives, issues, and events in order to educate and inform individuals with developmental disabilities and those that support them.
