Description:
Office of Hearings and Alternative Dispute Resolution
In this office housing the agency's administrative law judges, interns are supervised by one judge but work with several judges in the course of a semester. Depending on the needs of the office, the interns may perform legal research, draft memos or rulings, or assist a judge in conducting a hearing, managing collaborative processes or the mediation of settlement negotiations, or developing policy recommendations. Interns participate in team meetings, negotiations and conferences as part of a case team. Diverse issues are presented for intern work.
Office of General Counsel
The Office of General Counsel is responsible for representing and appearing on behalf of the Public Service Commission in all actions and proceedings involving questions related to the New York Public Service Law or within the jurisdiction of the Commission. The General Counsel provides the Chairperson and the Commission with legal advice, represents the agency in court and before federal agencies, advises Department personnel on legal issues relating to utility regulation and prepares proposed regulations and legislation. Legal interns in this office performed extensive legal research, drafted legal memoranda and regularly attended policy and strategy meetings related to the Office of General Counsel's responsibilities. In addition, the interns assist with appellate litigation and settlement negotiations.
