Proposal Information

Description:

The goal of the Forensic Internship Program is to provide real-world work experience for students pursuing a career in the field of Forensic Science.


The New York State Police provides forensic services in the following disciplines:

Biological Sciences, Computer Crime Unit, Drug Chemistry, Evidence Receiving, Firearms & Toolmarks, Forensic Identification Unit, Quality Assurance, Questioned Documents, Toxicology and Trace Evidence. Not all disciplines are practiced at all State Police Laboratory facilities.


Duties/Assignments:
*Will assist with non-evidentiary tasks associated with:
*Collecting, documenting and testing of assigned materials
*Establishing and searching databases
*Testing and validating new methods
*Job-shadow Forensic Scientists who are assigned to different sections within the Laboratory.
*May observe courtroom testimony of laboratory employees.
*Upon completion of the internship, the student will provide a written report on their experience with the New York State Police Laboratory System.


Applicants must meet the New York State Student Intern Eligibility Requirements in order to apply for an internship.

*Prior to beginning a Forensic Science Internship, the student must pass an all-encompassing background investigation. The investigation includes a Criminal History check (requiring a non-refundable $85.75 fingerprint fee), a polygraph and drug test. This process could take up to three (3) months to complete.
