Proposal Information

Description:

The Office of Commission Operations & Municipal Assistance is responsible for working directly with the State Civil Service Commission. Professionals in this office function as advisors to State and local human resource professionals regarding the preparation and submission of matters overseen by the State Commission. These professionals also function as agents of the State Commission and are responsible for performing a variety of oversight responsibilities.


Interns will be afforded the opportunity to learn about the role of the Civil Service Commission in ensuring fair and open competition for government employment, effective recruitment of a qualified workforce, and the administration of government employment at the State and local levels. All interns will be provided the opportunity to attend a meeting of the State Civil Service Commission, work with State and municipal civil service administrators regarding the projects assigned, and will receive training in the fundamentals of New York State's merit system and how it operates.


The projects assigned will be in one or more of the following areas depending upon the interests and specific skill set of the candidates:


Technical writing: involves researching and compiling information pertaining to State Commission policies and procedures;


Development of electronic resources: involves working with local government agencies to obtain, verify and compile information resources for use by staff and municipal civil service professionals agencies; and


Municipal government consulting: involves training in the fundamentals of the merit and fitness system, research involving specific questions posed by municipal civil service agencies and members of the public, and the formulation of responses.


In order to perform the projects assigned, candidates must possess knowledge in basic research procedures, strong writing and analytical skills, and a basic proficiency in the operation of Microsoft Office software. Close attention to detail is required to perform the projects which will be assigned.
