Overview

The New York State Internship Program welcomes applications from undergraduate and graduate students attending colleges and universities throughout New York State, as well as New York State residents studying elsewhere. Interns are placed within specific areas of New York State executive branch agencies or departments, where they gain valuable experience, interact with government leaders and policymakers, and contribute to meaningful projects.

Compensation

Student intern compensation varies by agency and assignment. Hourly rates typically range from $16 to $27, with most positions paying between $18 to $20 per hour. Some internships are unpaid. Certain internships may also qualify for academic credit; students should contact their academic institution for details.

Recruitment Guidance

Internship posting and hiring is now on a continuous basis. Agencies are encouraged to post and interview year-round to meet their respective needs while also being aware of academic calendars. We recommend agencies start the recruitment process early! Give yourself several months to promote opportunities, review applications, interview candidates, and complete the hiring process. Most students expect to have an internship offer prior to the start of their next term.

Fall: Post opportunities early, connect with colleges, attend career fairs; hire for the spring and recruit for the summer term.
Spring: Hire for the summer and start preparing for recruitment for the fall.
Summer: Hire and onboard interns while planning your recruitment strategy for the upcoming calendar year; hire for the fall and recruit for the spring term.
Year-Round: Post opportunities as hiring needs arise and maintain relationships with colleges, career centers, and students.
