Proposal Information

Description:

The NYS DEC DLF BISEH's Invasive Species Coordination Section seeks an intern to assist with a study using Geographical Information Systems to predict grass carp movement between introduction sites and secondary capture locations. The intern will also use environmental DNA to survey for the presence of grass carp in areas with suspected fish. The intern will be responsible for utilizing/updating a database of known grass carp locations to perform the GIS analyses. The intern will coordinate with regional DEC staff on this project. Use of Microsoft Office, Program R and ArcGIS will be incorporated into the project. Additionally, the intern will assist with other AIS related surveys as they arise. The intern will work with the DEC Aquatic Invasive Species Section to complete these tasks. Daily tasks include data entry, data manipulation, data visualization, field sample collection and analysis. Objectives of this work will be to enable a fuller understanding of how grass carp are using the environment outside of introduction sites and better inform management strategies. Hours will typically be 20 hours per week Monday through Friday between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM
